Rise Up!!!
And each and every one of us has some power in influencing which direction we as a global community, riding on spaceship earth, moves toward: destruction or sustainability. Or as MLK said it, chaos or community. The one thing I know, is that apathy will only make things worse. So get involved! In any way that makes sense to you. Plant the seeds of the new revolution, both literaly and figuratively. Get your hands dirty. Engage in civil disobediance, sign petitions, meet your neighbors, create art and music, form neighborhood councils, take control of your life. Their are millions of ways to make revolution and to replace oppressive systems with healthy ones, so chose a project and start having fun. Understand that change comes slow, and we got a long way to go. Despair is normal and natural, let it pass through you and continue with your mission...
And as Robert Kennedy once said, "“Few will have the greatness to bend history itself, but each of us can work to change a small portion of events. It is from numberless diverse acts of courage and belief that human history is shaped. Each time a man stands up for an ideal, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring those ripples build a current which can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”
My activist story
In college I would take notes by writing rhymes. At some point a fellow student saw my rhymes my sociological philosophical rhymes and invited me to perform as an opening act for the celebrated spoken word artist Andrea Gibson. I performed some polical poems about mass consumption and political curruption and afterwards I was invited to join a Social Justice Club on campus. I joined and we did chalk art and hosted radical documentaries, we protested and did street theater, culminating in participating in the first U.S. Social Forum. Upon returning from the forum, I organized a miniscale version of the US social forum at my University, the University of Idaho. The event was a success in bringing artist and activist and the curious together to discuss and organize around environmental and social justice. The event was followed by more similar events.
In the following years, I learned about food justice and permaculture and I spent time integrating this knowledge into my lifestyle. I worked as a gardener and participated in community gardens and did guerilla gardening on earth day. I also volunteered at the community radio station 92.5 KRFP, I was the hip hop and global music director, bringing new music to the station while DJ'ing a show with poitical music and the type of news you won't find on corporate news. I have also worked with the youth, mentoring at Peace Jam and conducting workshops to help teens build explore their story, build confidence, and create poems and songs for the Commuity Alliance of Lane County.
Then Occupy Happened. I heard about some people camping on Wall Street and I took the day off and handing out pamphlets to the homeless that said something like, "Why are you begging for change when you could be demanding change" along with some stats about wealth inequality. I heard about the first local Occupy meeting in Eugene after the fact. I missed the second meeting, after planning to attend and became sick to the stomach. I took the stomach sickness as a sign that I was supposed to be at the meeting. I went to the third meeting and signed up for the morale committee. By the forth meeting the general assembly asked for an update from the morale committee. I remember standing in the room, encouraging morale committee members to stand up and speak. Nobody would do so, so I approached the assembly, said, "I'm not sure what is going on, but I'm here to help in any way I can." After I was asked to MC the first March. A day later I was leading chants for thousands of people. From There, I was an active participant in the Occupy movement, camping on site acting as a peace keeper, organizing rallys and events, being the morale or spirit lifting presence at general assemblies and protests.
In the post Occupy-era I have continued to teach workshops and perform, to engage in guerilla gardening and speaking at city council meetings. Working on environmental causes and social justice campaigns. Some notable events I have worked on are, I taught a workshop at the "Social Justice, Real Justice conference" organized at the University of Oregon, and performing at the Eugene March Against Monsanto, once again leading chants for thousands.
